Deadwood's rich and raucous history lends itself well to the creation and development of a Kids Club based on historical figures and activities indigenous to Deadwood's early days. Drawing on such historical stars as Deadwood's first and most infamous Wild West Sheriff Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, as well as early Deadwood activities such as gold panning, scouting and log home building, children are encouraged to engage in fun, while learning a little bit about the history of the area at the same time.
Deadwood is unique in that the entire town has been placed on the national register of historic places. Deadwood Mountain Grand is part of that rich history as the resort's main building was renovated from a former "slime plant," or factory that squeezed the last bit of gold ore out of the rock piped down from the Homestake Mine at Lead, our sister city. The substance that was left after that process resembled, well, slime. Hence, our association with activities sometimes related to slime, but mostly related to Deadwood's most
The activities to be included at Deadwood Mountain Grand seek to capitalize on the uniqueness of the National Historic Landmark designation.
Slimy Scavenger Hunt
Little guests will be given a map of the resort with 10 destinations to seek out and write one word answers.
At the end, all kids who have "slimed out" will be treated to their own personal can of green, gooey, sticky slime, in hopes that the details of their highly unique FAM tour sticks with them.
The first kid back to the start gets a Slime Plant t-shirt.
Seth's Little Sheriffs Club
Immediately upon arriving at Deadwood Mountain Grand, children will be sworn in to Seth's Little Sheriffs Club, as Seth Bullock is a famous Wild West sheriff who was instrumental in establishing law and order during Deadwood's Gold Rush days. They will be deputized Deadwood-style, then given their oath of office, certificate of Sheriffness and a corresponding sheriff's badge.
GIVE US A HAND: Leave Your Mark on History
Kids will be allowed to leave their handprint with signature and town or a piece of artwork depicting their favorite sight in Deadwood or the Black Hills for placement on our GRAND KIDS WALL OF FAME, located in the Kids Activity Center. All children who participate will earn a small souvenir from Deadwood Mountain Grand.
Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane Meet 'N Greets
Kids will be treated to brief introductions of these historical characters in period costume, then treated to autograph/photo ops.
Deadwood A to Z -- History Lesson/Adams Museum visit
A pint-sized lesson on Deadwood history that includes a visit to the Adams Museum, keeper of Deadwood's gold rush history and the chance to see such sights as the famous Potato Creek Johnny gold nugget, a plesiosaur (rare dinosaur fossil) and even a mountain lion and a two-headed calf!!!!! This activity incorporates the children's book "Adams A to Z" featuring everything a kid needs to know about Deadwood, written by local author Jaci Conrad Pearson and features activities gleaned from the book.
Children will be afforded their very own valuable chance to strike it rich in Deadwood with the Little Golddiggers gold panning activity. Each child who participates will get a free vile of fool's gold.
