Winter Fun!

Parks and Monuments in the Black Hills

Masterpieces of man and nature – there is something about the transcendent landscapes of the Black Hills and Badlands of western South Dakota that calls to the highest spirits of man. To the Lakota nation, this small mountain “island” in the midst of the vast prairie is the sacred center of creation. And the magnificent national heirlooms of Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse memorials speak to the impact these majestic mountains had on two of our nation’s greatest sculptors, Gutzon Borglum and Korczak Ziolkowski.

There’s a bounty of natural wonders sure to keep visitors inspired and excited every hour of their vacation. Just east of the Black Hills is the otherworldly sandstone spires of Badlands National Park; to the north, the granite monolith of Devils Tower thrusts its massive bulk into the Wyoming sky.

In the midst of the Hills lies Custer State Park, the great wildlife refuge where 3,000 buffalo roam free, and where the Needles and Harney Peak exhilarate all who love the great outdoors. Underground are two of America’s finest cave systems, Jewel Cave and Wind Cave.

There’s a plethora of national parks, state parks, national forests, national grasslands, wilderness areas and refuges and national scenic byways, all within a few short hours’ drive of each other. Awesome adventures await!

Four distinct seasons in the great outdoors are some of the best reasons for living in the Black Hills of South Dakota. And some of the best reasons for visiting here. The winter season gives us an excuse to savor the radiance and aroma of the fireplace, and to snuggle up with a blanket feels extra-good. Instead of dreading the cold season, we humor it, play it, embrace it and romance it.

Summer in The Black Hills

Summer is a busy time in the Black Hills. It’s when visitors take advantage of the beautiful outdoors, and all there is to do here. What better way to enjoy the outdoor magnificence than by exploring it — on horseback, hiking, biking, golfing, in a 4x4 discovering the back country, or on a jet ski or in a boat enjoying one of 18 beautiful lakes here.

Seth's Lil' Sheriffs Club

Deadwood's rich and raucous history lends itself well to the creation and development of a Kids Club based on historical figures and activities indigenous to Deadwood's early days. Drawing on such historical stars as Deadwood's first and most infamous Wild West Sheriff Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, as well as early Deadwood activities such as gold panning, scouting and log home building, children are encouraged to engage in fun, while learning a little bit about the history of the area at the same time.

Deadwood is unique in that the entire town has been placed on the national register of historic places. Deadwood Mountain Grand is part of that rich history as the resort's main building was renovated from a former "slime plant," or factory that squeezed the last bit of gold ore out of the rock piped down from the Homestake Mine at Lead, our sister city. The substance that was left after that process resembled, well, slime. Hence, our association with activities sometimes related to slime, but mostly related to Deadwood's most

The activities to be included at Deadwood Mountain Grand seek to capitalize on the uniqueness of the National Historic Landmark designation.

Slimy Scavenger Hunt

slimy scavenger huntLittle guests will be given a map of the resort with 10 destinations to seek out and write one word answers.

At the end, all kids who have "slimed out" will be treated to their own personal can of green, gooey, sticky slime, in hopes that the details of their highly unique FAM tour sticks with them.
The first kid back to the start gets a Slime Plant t-shirt.

Seth's Little Sheriffs Club

Immediately upon arriving at Deadwood Mountain Grand, children will be sworn in to Seth's Little Sheriffs Club, as Seth Bullock is a famous Wild West sheriff who was instrumental in establishing law and order during Deadwood's Gold Rush days. They will be deputized Deadwood-style, then given their oath of office, certificate of Sheriffness and a corresponding sheriff's badge.

GIVE US A HAND: Leave Your Mark on History

hand printKids will be allowed to leave their handprint with signature and town or a piece of artwork depicting their favorite sight in Deadwood or the Black Hills for placement on our GRAND KIDS WALL OF FAME, located in the Kids Activity Center. All children who participate will earn a small souvenir from Deadwood Mountain Grand.

Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane Meet 'N Greets

gun fighterKids will be treated to brief introductions of these historical characters in period costume, then treated to autograph/photo ops.

Deadwood A to Z -- History Lesson/Adams Museum visit

a2zA pint-sized lesson on Deadwood history that includes a visit to the Adams Museum, keeper of Deadwood's gold rush history and the chance to see such sights as the famous Potato Creek Johnny gold nugget, a plesiosaur (rare dinosaur fossil) and even a mountain lion and a two-headed calf!!!!! This activity incorporates the children's book "Adams A to Z" featuring everything a kid needs to know about Deadwood, written by local author Jaci Conrad Pearson and features activities gleaned from the book.

Little Golddiggers

lil gold diggerChildren will be afforded their very own valuable chance to strike it rich in Deadwood with the Little Golddiggers gold panning activity. Each child who participates will get a free vile of fool's gold.
